The world is facing a pandemic in the form of the COVID-19 outbreak. In this situation, one cannot be sure about the authenticity of information coming their way. And in today’s time, where information exchange is rampant, it can lead to a ton of questions about which method to use for disinfection and sanitization against COVID-19. The only thing that can assure the masses in these grave times is education towards the prevention of COVID-19.

Significance Of QUATS Compound

The quaternary ammonium compounds (or quats) are a family of low-level disinfectants with most quats being derived from benzalkonium. Quats are reacted to provide a variety of chain lengths and molecular structures so that the mix of quats used in the disinfectant provides a wider range of efficacy than a single chain. Quats are generally used to disinfect countertops, toilets, and other high touch environmental surfaces and floors. They are low cost and used in many applications. 

Quaternary ammonium compounds are cationic disinfectants. This means the quats chain carries a positive (plus) charge on one end of the molecule; many soils and soaps/detergents carry an anionic or negative (minus) charge. Quats can also bind with, or be absorbed by, materials and fibers including cotton (e.g., cleaning rags and mops). Quats generally take 3-10 minutes to disinfect and should be used with cleaning tools that are tested to be compatible.

Why There Is A Demand Of QUATS Based Disinfectant During COVID-19?

Quats are excellent antimicrobial agents. By themselves, they are odorless, non-staining, and non-corrosive to metals when used according to directions.  They effectively kill bacteria, viruses, molds, and fungi on solid surfaces and in water.  Commercial formulations are often used to kill germs that can cause disease in hospitals, restaurants, schools, and on the farm.

Consumer products used to disinfect in the kitchen, bathroom and other rooms of the home also contain quats.  Some quat formulations are used to help preserve exposed wood by preventing the growth of harmful molds and fungi.  Still, others are used in cosmetics, lotions, contact lens cleaning solution, and nasal sprays as a preservative.  Finally, some quats are used as first aid sprays to help prevent infection from minor wounds.

QUATS Based Disinfectants Are Best In Stop The Chain Of COVID-19 virus

Yes. Covid-19 is an enveloped virus, which means the protein capsid containing the viral genome is surrounded by a lipid membrane, and that offers a fairly flimsy defense against disinfectants.

QUATs-based products will disrupt this lipid layer, and that stops the virus from being able to recognize and latch on to host cells. The disinfectant solutions at concentrations of 70–80% have been effective in deactivating the enveloped viruses with one minute exposure time.

Quaternary ammonium compounds are another class of disinfectants that will attack the lipid structure of the viral envelope, and these are typically used as surface disinfectants. Bleach and other potent oxidizers break down the virus’s essential components.

The Covid-19 pandemic has boosted the demand for QUATs based disinfectants and at the same disrupted the supply chains of the companies that make it. But before using any QUATS based disinfectant, you must make sure that you have properly protected your skin, eyes, and nose. 

Moreover, it is essential to maintain proper ventilation while you are disinfecting the frequently used surface, make use of the recommended amount of solution, and do not use QUATs based disinfectant with any other chemicals.
